“After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel.” Judges 2:10 NLT
Lord, this verse is so sad. The generation that died was the generation that you brought out of the wilderness and used to inhabit the promised land. They saw the manifestation of your presence in the cloud by day and fire by night as you led them through the wilderness. They saw you split the Jordan River so they could enter the promised land. They saw you bring down the walls of Jericho and defeat many other kingdoms that stood in their way. There were so many miraculous things that they saw first-hand that demonstrated your power and love for them. Yet, it appears they were so wrapped up in what you were using them to do, that they forgot to instill in their children a knowledge of you and an understanding of what you had done for them. What a tragedy. We can deeply know you and see you do such amazing things in our lifetime, but if we neglect to pass on our beliefs and faith to the next generation then we have failed at something so vital.
Lord, help us. Show us how to pass along the stories of how you moved to those younger than us. Help us not to be so caught up in our own things that we miss the opportunity to mentor the next generation. Show us how to lead them into encountering your presence and seeing you use them to do the miraculous. Holy Spirit, lead us and make us purposeful in this. Help us learn the importance of not doing things on our own, but passing the baton and continuing to run alongside, encouraging and training. Let us repeat this process until the next generation is running strong in their relationship with you and then turning to do the same with those behind them. Help us leave a legacy that glorifies your name through many generations to come.
In Jesus name, amen.
