“But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my fortress, the God who shows me steadfast love.” Psalm 59:16-17 ESV
Lord, we praise you for your strength. How wonderful that we don’t have to worry about anything defeating you. Nothing begins to compare to your strength or your authority. We also praise you for how you love us. It is steadfast and unconditional. Here on earth a loving husband will do all he can to protect his wife, and a loving parent would die to protect their child, so how much more will your perfect love do all you can to be our protector. You are our fortress and refuge where we can always find love, protection, comfort, restoration, and strength. We praise you for your goodness to us. We praise you because we can always count on you. Even when things don’t go as we wanted or we find ourselves in a place of pain and heartache, that doesn’t mean you are not there for us. That is the time where we need to run to you the most. We need to allow you to grow and strengthen us in those seasons. We need to allow you to comfort us and get to know you and your love at a greater level in those seasons.
When we look at David’s life as he wrote this song, he was only walking in obedience to you. You anointed him to be king, but he was running for his life. But we can see how much you were protecting him. And we can see how that season grew his faith in you, prepared him to be king, and prepared Israel for him to be king. It was all for a reason, and you loved and cared for him even through the tough years. You are so good and faithful!
In Jesus name, amen.
